Pre-K Activities- Tues. May 5th

Good morning, Pre-K!  I am excited to share with you activities all about caterpillars and butterflies this week!  Which one do you like better?  I am a butterfly fan!  We are going to begin today by reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle.

I also have a song that we can sing that is all about apples and bananas and is a pretty silly song that I think you will have fun singing!

Caterpillar craft:

Here are two ways to create a caterpillar out of paper!  In the first example, we can practice our cutting skills and our printing skills.  You will see that Miss Sam cut out enough circles for every letter in her name, wrote one letter on every green circle and drew a face on the red circle.  She then glued her caterpillar together!  Parents, if your child needs help, you can cut out the circles for them and then write their letters and they can trace over them!

In this second example, you can cut strips of paper (an adult can draw lines for you to cut on) and then start with one strip and glue the ends together to make a circle.  With the next  strip you will go through the circle and then glue the ends together.  You can continue this until you think your caterpillar is long enough!

Another fun caterpillar activity I have for you is to paint a caterpillar with something that is not a paintbrush!  You could use a marshmallow, a balloon, a paper towel roll, anything that is circular in shape!

Fruit salad:

A fun snack activity to go with this story is to make a fruit salad with your child!  Compare the fruit that is in the story with the fruit you have in your fridge!  Have your child help with the washing of the fruit you decide to put in your fruit salad and they can also help with cutting the fruit with a plastic knife and then putting it in a big bowl and stirring it to mix it all up.  We made a fruit salad for Valentine’s Day in Pre-K and everyone had so much fun preparing it and then enjoying it!

Movement:

This Cosmic Kids Yoga video is based on the story The Very Hungry Caterpillar.  I hope you have fun with it!

Mrs. Lawrence
